Course Description
This workshop presented by the KNIME developers (group of Prof. Michael Berthold at the University of Konstanz, Germany) will provide participants with detailed insight into the use of KNIME as data mining tool. In particular some dedicated sessions will describe usage of this modular data exploration platform for the life sciences. If you desire a rapid and substantial boost in your understanding of data mining tools and techniques by means of an intuitive and user-friendly platform (KNIME), then this workshop is designed for you.
KNIME is an open source pipelining platform that enables the user to create data flows visually (also known as pipelines), execute analysis steps and later investigate the results through interactive views on data and models. Analysis flow are built by consecutively connecting processing units called nodes. The raw input data, that can be read from various data sources, is passed along the pipeline to other nodes which handle a number of different operations such as filtering, merging, modelling and data mining. Finally, nodes providing tools for interactive visualization help to explore the results.
KNIME provides an excellent data mining platform in life sciences for drug discovery informatics, bioinformatics and chemistry research. For example, KNIME includes nodes that can be used to visualize and transform molecular structures, compute descriptors and molecular properties, fingerprint(s) generation, perform data mining, implement machine learning algorithms, and search for functional groups. A wide array of nodes dedicated to life sciences is available as, for example, the Schrödinger KNIME Extensions, a powerful tool for modelling and cheminformatics. By means of the these extensions, workflows can be constructed to bring molecules through a series of complex and diverse operations and accurate predictions can be generated.
Learning Objectives
By the conclusion of the workshop participants will have developed an understanding of:
Who should attend?
Biologists, chemists, analysts, statisticians, bioinformaticians and scientists in general as well as managers who wish to learn the use of a modular data exploration platform (KNIME) to develop their own research data processing networks (pipelines) for scientific analytics and decision making without any programming.
